Making your workplace ecofriendly

Eco-friendly workplace

If your workplace is anything like mine was, there’s ton of waste everywhere. From the stack of documents that mysteriously appear next to the copier machine that no one ever claims to the garbage cans full of recyclables (i.e. soda cans, pizza boxes) that the cleaning crew discards nightly in the trash compactor out back. After becoming more environmentally conscious of my own actions and making changes in my home life to conserve more and use less, I turned to my “home away from home” – work (sad isn’t it).

As luck would have it, a good friend of mine works in my company’s HR department and she was open to listening to my ideas about ways the company could dispose of its waste in a more eco-friendly manner—placing different colored bins in the office kitchen and next to the copier. You know, small changes that go a long way. Within a few weeks, my company was able to get on the route of a local recycling service and lessen it’s footprint.

Perhaps your company already does these things and you would like to see them do even more. There are tons online resources available that provide step by step instructions on how to get a program started for batteries, light bulbs and computer accessories. I challenge you to minimize your Facebook page for a few minutes and look into ways you can affect eco-friendly change in your “home away from home.”

Just in case you’re a little overwhelmed by the prospect of taking on yet another project at work, remember: “As any change must begin somewhere, it is the single individual who will experience it and carry it through. The change must indeed begin with an individual; it might be any one of us. Nobody can afford to look round and to wait for somebody else to do what he is loath to do himself.” --Carl G. Jung (Man and His Symbols)
